Citizens has been designated a Compass Agency, one of only four providers to hold that designation in all of New York State. Compass is an OPWDD initiative that recognizes and promotes provider agencies that have progressed beyond minimal regulatory compliance and have achieved excellence in service delivery. Compass agencies engage their entire organization by encouraging people supported (or who receive supports), board members, management, and staff to work together in a person-centered environment with the goal of promoting and achieving valued outcomes for the people served.

Compass has evolved and grown to a level in which empowerment is the most predominant theme, influencing all aspects of Citizens and driving all other Compass criterion. Teaching, supporting and reinforcing self-advocacy is a key ingredient to empowerment. Citizens council meets on an ongoing basis and report to the Compass Committee and the Board of Directors. People’s voices are loud and strong and an integral part of Agency decision making.

Council on Quality and Leadership Accreditation

Citizens is accredited by the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL) in Person Centered Excellence with Distinction. We are among a select group in New York State to hold this distinction.
