Holly Jolly July Party Brings Festive, Summer Fun
The holidays came early this year as people supported by Citizens Options Unlimited’s Residential Program celebrated at the Holly Jolly July Party at The Sterling in Bethpage on July 10.
Combining the joy of the holidays with summertime fun, the event offered an evening of music, food, photo booths, and giveaways. “Getting dressed up and going to an elegant event is something everyone should experience,” said Lynne Brewer, Community Outreach Liaison.
Planning focused on making the event a positive experience for people supported, from start to finish. With time spent on the registration process, selecting foods that met each person’s dietary requirements, and ensuring tables included room for wheelchairs.
All the hard work paid off, as everyone had an incredible time, including John Ginther, who is supported by Self-Direction.
When asked about his favorite parts, John beamed, “The photo booths I liked, hanging out with my friends.”
All throughout the night, John had a great time on the dance floor, especially when DJ Carl Bartelli played newer hits.
Everyone always looks forward to an opportunity to boogie on the dance floor to all kinds of music, from throwbacks to today’s hits. And, the dinner buffet is always satisfying everyone’s taste buds, as well as the cake and the refreshing ice cream bar.
This is the second time people supported by both Citizens Options Unlimited and AHRC Nassau attended a “Holiday in July”-themed party.
“The volunteers are 100% the backbone of this event,” said Lynne, who worked with 8 volunteers to make the event a success. “I always love seeing the people we support dancing and catching up with their friends, or even meeting new friends! It puts a smile on everyone’s face, from the guests to the volunteers to staff like myself.”
Unlike the traditional Holiday party hosted in December, Santa Claus arrived wearing beach attire, ready to party with his festive friends.
And, when Mr. Claus made his grant entrance, he was, as always, greeted with a warm welcome of hugs and high fives.
Overall, the Holly Jolly July party was one for the books. Guests brought home lots of goodies, like glow-in-the-dark sunglasses, mini beach balls, leis, and a tote bag, as well as photos to remember the night by from the two photo booths. But most of all, guests left with new memories and new friends.
