Paintbrushes, canvases, and plenty of imagination filled the ballroom of the Brookville mansion as the Citizens Residential Council hosted a May 21 fundraiser to support future events, including Friendsgiving and a donation to a local nonprofit.

The Residential Council meets monthly to build self-advocacy skills and discuss issues important to residents. It’s open to all the men and women who reside in Citizens Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRAs). Members also plan fundraisers to support good causes and social events to keep the community engaged.

Approximately 70 people participated in an evening of painting, conversation, and dinner, expressing their creativity while enjoying time with friends and neighbors.

“The more people, the better,” said Matt Hofele, Council President. “That’s what we always say.”

Volunteer Danielle Moskowitz guided attendees through the painting of a patriotic gnome, just in time for Memorial Day. The whimsical subject inspired many to add their own artistic touches, transforming the project into personal masterpieces.

The evening began with a dinner catered by Wheatley Farms, giving everyone an opportunity to socialize before picking up their paintbrushes.

Steven Barsh, Secretary, live-streamed the event so that anyone who couldn’t attend in person could still participate, a feature offered at most Council events. “I think supporting the council is very important,” Steven said. “It was a nice success.”

Tim Flynn, Assistant Director, supported attendees at the buffet line, while Justin DiNigris, Assistant Director, served a variety of mocktails for guests to try throughout the evening. Other team members, including Tammy Vallancourt, Manager of Ontario Avenue, and Deanna Allen, Director of Residential Services, helped ensure attendees had everything they needed, including food, seats, and supplies, so they could relax and enjoy the event. Matt also assisted by handing out supplies.

“Everybody really enjoyed it,” said Tessa Guillaume-Lewis, Assistant Director and Council Representative. “It’s very important for them to be together, it builds camaraderie, and it helps them make connections.”

Members of the Residential Council have more events to look forward to, including bake sales and dances. Stay tuned!
