At Camp Loyaltown, many campers take on new responsibilities — and find a sense of purpose in doing so.
“At Camp Loyaltown, every day brings new opportunity,” said Savita Sharma, Director of Family Support Services at Camp Loyaltown. “Whether working in the camp store, assisting in the cafeteria, helping with arts and crafts, or supporting the camp office, campers build confidence and independence, gaining pride in making meaningful contributions to camp life.”
“I am proud of the fact that I get to do this,” said Emily Brown, a camper speaking about the Crafty Corner. “I clean. I help organize things. I help unclog glue bottles.”
Emily’s service in Crafty Corner helps staff and campers who need a clean space and fresh supplies to create. It also gives her a great chance to learn new things.
“I do like to learn, because I’m always happy to learn about new things,” Emily said.
During mealtimes, campers laugh and enjoy each other’s company as they set and serve tables. Camper Daniel Concepcion returned to the cafeteria crew for the third summer in a row. He likes helping alongside his friends Bobby Lee, Peter Hadfield, and Michelle Rudoff.
“I help out with setting up the tables,” Daniel said.
After dinner and before evening activities, the Camp Store opens so campers and staff can grab snacks and sodas before a night of dancing, games, and other fun activities. Camper Matthew Fasano loves being a part of the Camp Store.
“Everybody gets excited here,” Matthew said. “I do this every day from 6 to 6:30. I’m the best here at the Camp Store,” Matthew said.
“This kind of enthusiasm is natural when you love where you are and what you’re doing. It’s what strengthens our community, reminding us that everyone has valuable talents to share,” shared Savita. “Together, we have a camp where every person belongs, every contribution matters, and every success is celebrated.”
